I would like to wish a very Happy Birthday to the most amazing Woman | Wife | Mother in the world… my amazing partner in crime, Melanie. Today you turn more beautiful then you were yesterday, as you have done every day since the day I met you and declared you the prettiest girl I have ever seen. I would like to thank you on your birthday. I thank you for loving me, and allowing me to love you as much as I do. I thank you for making me a husband in awe knowing he has somehow ended up with a woman way out of his league. I thank you for making me a father to two amazing children who adore their mother and smile ear to ear when they know she is near. I thank you for tolerating the intolerable that is sometimes,… me (Snoring. Behavior that may make it seem that you have three kids. Bad jokes. so on… so on. Let’s keep this about you). I thank you for all that you sacrifice to make our family as strong as it is, and for unconditionally carrying the weight that I drop. I thank you for being the hardest working woman I know. And I thank you for making me smile each and every day I get to see your pretty face. I hope on your birthday I can return the favor and make you smile as well.

Sara and Emil are the perfect couple to post and wake me from my 172 day blog coma I have been in. Mostly because they are just an amazing couple that I am happy to now call friends…. but also because they got married two weeks ago and I figure it is best I share the engagement pictures first. A BIG thank you to our mutual friend Cori for having Emil and Sara take a look at me for their engagement and wedding needs, I owe you. We took some time on a beautifully cloudy PNW day to stomp around in downtown Bellevue… then we made our way to the waterfront in Kirkland…. then we got on a plane and flew to Sonoma California and got married! Well they got married, I just took pictures. And drank wine. Here’s a quick peak with more to come from them, and the mountains of work I have been hoarding all year.

Addi & Tyler

We all know there is something about twin siblings that is special. When you get twins like Addi and Tyler together, their unique personalities mesh together into one great beautiful collaborating personality that makes it impossible not to smile and admire the camaraderie. (More Below…)

Like the twins, I am double fortunate that I am both their uncle and godfather. And it was definitely camera time when they showed up to our place in their Sundays best ready for some pictures. There is not much direction needed in taking pictures of these two as they are non-stop smiling, laughing, and wrestling with each other. When they were born, Tyler and Addi decided to join us in this great world a few months earlier then expected and they were just tiny little angels that you could probably rest in the palm of your hand. My awe is renewed every time I see them, always taller, more mature then time before, and a lot of time using bigger words then I can comprehend (although I play it off cool). They are great kids in a great family. And after the hard work of getting the photos taken, we immediately moved tot he kitchen where we demolished a pizza and as it should be, landed some grease and sauce stains on those purdy clothes of theirs. OK, I was much more a pizza stain wreck then they were, but they definitely had a few stains on theirs as well Thanks Addi, Tyler, Jim & Jessica! Hope to see you guys soon!

Seattle Swish

Who says Seattle doesn’t have a basketball team? Anyone who tells you that isn’t paying attention. The PNW has always been a proven hotbed of hoops talent and the Seattle Swish prove that this is still true even after the suits shipped off our beloved Sonics to the sticks. The Swish are an elite team of ballers ages 13 and under gathered from all corners of the greater Puget Sound area. Running the show are coaches Jason Correa-Wood and Jeff Razore, two solid guys dedicated to the development of these young athletes natural abilities, while instilling the sportsmanship and values to be successful in all aspects of life. Combined they bring years of successful youth coaching that is backed up with winning records and championships. And the Swish team is a squad of players that are as solid in character as they are in athletic abilities. And it shows…. more below…

I was brought on to get some photos of them at their final practice before their first tournament of the season. That night they got their new team uniforms and kicks that are better then some of the fugly unis I see at the pro level. I had taken over half the court with c-stands and softboxes and all combined it was an easy atmosphere for young kid to get a big head, but there was none of that. They were focused, running their drills, would come over get the picture taken, and then run right back to get in the practice. Every kid would not allow themselves to be distracted from their preparation for the marathon of games they had coming up. I was impressed.

And their preparation and hard work is paying off as they are marching through the Pacific Northwest snatching up championship trophies all while acting like they’ve been there before. They took Salem, Oregon where they got their hands their first title at The National Super Regional Tournament. Over Memorial Day Weekend they snatched up title #2 at the Northwest Championships Tournament in Tacoma. Next up is the EBC Challenge in Redmond, WA June 10th – 12th as they make their way to Vegas in July to further spread the word that basketball is far from dead in Seattle.

What’s Crackin?

That is Alexander Bell talking on his Motorolla DynaTAC 8000X. That’s how he answers all his calls,, “What’s crackin?”. Its been a while since I posted to my blog. So long that it unfriended me on Facebook. So I thought I would give it some love tonight and see if I can get a friend back. 2010 ended in run-me-to-the-ground sprint of balancing family, full time job, and my photography. I was shooting A LOT, and it was wearing me down. 6 hours of sleep turned into about 3 hours of sleep, for about 3 months straight. I was starting to look like a drug mule whose choice of tranportation was the bags under my eyes. I was getting a lot of great pics but my steam always ran out when it came time to share them. Blog posts were started…. and then deserted as I found myself staring at the screen trying to write something witty and charming to describe my shoots. But the brain was not cooperating, the SAVE DRAFT was clicked, and the posts joined that stack of other neglected efforts of mine to put my work out into the world. My man @JShoda calls in Blogstipation. Well the time has come to get out of the funk. I have chowed down about 5 FiberOne bars tonght and I am ready to clear the pipes. Thought this was a good way to start.

2011 has been good! Good and busy. The best of all of it is that my beautiful wife, adorable daughter, and myself are expecting a baby boy come Sept and we couldn’t be any more excited about it. I’ve been shooting some cool projects that I’ve had a lot of fun with and my wedding season starts tomorrow. Tate, Julie, & Jeff

My streak of posting rainy day shoots continues, but hey, this is Seattle. When I met up with one year old Tate and his parents, Julie and Jeff, we decided to keep things dry and go indoors. So what do you do when you have to shoot inside with a little guy like Tate?…. You find all of his stuffed animals and blankets, litter the living room floor with them, then belly down on the ground and get to playing. I felt right at home since I do that every night with my daughter. Heck, I even do it when my daughter is not around, toys these days are ridiculously fun. These three make up a very cool family. Tate’s parents have already hooked him up with a Jeep to roll in and all I can say is, watch out ladies. I had a lot of fun hanging out with this good looking trio and they made it incredibly easy to get good pictures. I am looking forward to round two when we have some sunshine to go out and play in. Plus Tate promised he was going to take me off-roading in the Jeep Thanks again you guys for having me out to take some pictures! Hope to see you very soon.

Natalie, Ehrin, & Carter ~ Waiting for Gracie (no longer!)

As this post has been sitting in my drafts folder, it has become just that, POST. I captured these photos for Natalie, Ehrin, & Carter back in December as they patiently waited for the newest member of their family, little Gracie. And I am very excited for them to hear that Gracie came into this world, healthy and beautiful as can be, this last Saturday, February 12th. Congratulations you three… now four! You have a beautiful family. As with most of my shoots in December of last year, we managed to find a perfectly windy and blustery day to get some photos done. But that didn’t stop us. And it became quite obvious that it was not going to stop little man Carter from stomping the mud out of some puddles. You could tell by the look on Carter’s face as he stood in his little sisters waiting nursery that he was excited to have a buddy on the way that he could play with. Gracie decided that she was going to make Mom, Dad, and her brother wait a little longer then expected, but I bet it is safe to say that right about now, it was worth every extra second. Again, congrats you guys! Can’t wait to meet her.

Sarah & John ~ Engaged

I knew that I wanted to photograph Sarah and John when one of the first things they told me was that they were looking for a photographer that was willing to shoot their engagement photos on a perfectly soaked and rainy Pacific Northwest day. I agreed immediatley, told them I loved the idea, and I did. I will admit that for a moment, I thought this might just be a test for the photographers they were considering. Kind of a “What are you willing to do?”. I was pleasantly surprised when they not only chose me to photograph their big day, but did indeed want engagement photos in the rain. We scheduled the engagement pictures almost about a month in advance and amazingly, they couldn’t have picked a better day. For once, I was praying for rain the night before a shoot and December 11th ended up being one of the wettest, most blustery days in 2010 for Snoqualmie Washington. We made our way to Snoqualmie where nearly 40mph wind gusts were making the heavy rain come down sideways. It must have been pretty funny for Sarah and John to watch their soaking wet photographer try and hold an umbrella in the howling wind, wipe my lens, hold my gear, all while attempting to take shots. After only a couple of minutes I realized the umbrella was not going to work and it was time to get wet and put the weather seal of my Nikon to the test. We spent almost 2 hours in the rain, making our way through the town of Snoqualmie. We had a brief break from the rain for some hot caffiene at the Isadoras Cafe, where Sarah and John exchanged their favorite lines from 80′s movies. Appropriatley, Sarah quoted movies like Sixteen Candles and John, Children of the Corn, ha! Just as we wanted, we started dry and finished soaking wet, it was perfect. Congratulations on your engagement Sarah and John! I very much look forward to our next round of photos on your wedding day this summer.

Ashlee & Steve ~ Engaged

I had an incredibly fun time running around my hometown with Ashlee and Steve to capture the pictures that follow in this post. Also from Issaquah, these two were pretty darn easy to photograph. I want the folks I am photographing to simply do what they do, spend time with each other, make each other laugh, maybe lay a smooch on each other every once in a while. Ashlee and Steve had no problem doing just that. They are perfect for each other and because of that I have been smiling the entire time I have been finishing these photos, I can’t help it. At one point when they were standing in front of the old school Shell gas station down on Front Street, I quickly asked them to give me their serious straight faces… instead they both immediately burst into laughter… that is a better picture for sure Congrats Ash and Steve! Very happy for you guys and can’t wait to get some more pictures on your big day this summer! Don’t forget the smile word. (but also don’t repeat it!)
